Gone

If you leave, don't leave now
Please don't take my heart away
Promise me just one more night
Then we'll go our separate ways
With hours left time on our sides
Now it's fading fast
Every second every moment
We've got to--we've gotta make it last

I touch you once
I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends someday

If you leave I won't cry
I won't waste one single day
But if you leave don't look back
I'll be running the other way
Seven years went under the bridge
Like time was standing still
Heaven knows what happens now
You've got to--you've gotta say you will

I touch you once
I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd meet again

I touch you once
I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd still be friends

I touch you once
I touch you twice
I won't let go at any price
I need you now like I needed you then
You always said we'd meet again someday

If you leave
Oh if you leave
Oh if you leave
Don't look back
Don't look back

...and he's gone. Like the old saying goes, "If you love someone, set them free; if they come back, they're yours; if they don't, they never were." What it fails to mention is when you set him free, how goddamn miserable you'll be without him around. What about when he's the first thing you think about when you wake up and the last thing before you go to sleep? What about when every little thing reminds you of him? What about when you can practically still smell him on the pillow? Or the way it felt with your head on his chest? Or the way your heart skipped a beat when he called? And you wonder if he could even begin to know how much you want him. And it kills you to know that you may never see him again. And you have to summon everything you've got to push on. And you wait, and wait, for time to heal your wounds.

That feeling completely and absolutely sucks, and unfortunately there's no quick and dirty solution. Sometimes it's good enough to just keep breathing in and out all day long.
